Residents live in care suites which incorporate social space, a dining area and a kitchenette,... We spoke with 11 people who use the service and 12 relatives about their experience of the care provided. We spoke with 14 members of staff including the registered manager, compliance manager, deputy manager, clinical lead, nurses, care workers and supporting staff. We reviewed a range of records including 11 peoples’ care records and multiple medicine administration records. We looked at four staff files in relation to recruitment and supervision. A variety of records relating to the management of the service, such as audits, meetings, monitoring activity and training were reviewed.

This inspection was carried out by two inspectors and an Expert by Experience. An Expert by Experience is a person who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of care service. As part of this inspection we looked at the infection control and prevention measures in place. This was conducted so we can understand the preparedness of the service in preventing or managing an infection outbreak, and to identify good practice we can share with other services. Including what different types of care homes offer and why you might want to choose a home care service or look for support in your community. Firtree House Nursing Home
The Care Quality Commission is the official regulator for the care sector. They inspect care homes and care services to make sure they are safe, caring, effective, responsive and well-led. A registered manager is a person who has registered with the Care Quality Commission to manage the service. This means that they and the provider are legally responsible for how the service is run and for the quality and safety of the care provided. We will request an action plan from the provider to understand what they will do to improve the standards of quality and safety.

About the service Cornford House is a residential care home providing accommodation and nursing and personal care for up to 70 people. The service is arranged across four floors with lift access to lower ground and upper floors. There were 20 people using the service at the time of our inspection. Cornford House also provides personal care for people living in their own homes, within the same accommodation. These people have a tenancy agreement and a separate agreement for their care provision.
Safe
In the dementia unit, a specific programme of activities and experiences is offered with one to one attention for example reading, talking, manicure and massage. Choice Dining is a food-focused accreditation designed to give care-seekers like yourself the ability to consider and compare the dining experience within different care settings. We have therefore encouraged every provider to open their ‘online windows and doors’ to help you make an informed choice. The profile score is a measure of how much information has been provided.
We are mindful of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our regulatory function. We will continue to monitor the service and will take further action if needed. Medicines were managed safely, and people received them as prescribed. People were supported to eat and drink enough and told us the food was good in Cornford House. At the time of our inspection there was a registered manager in post.

Cornford House is one of a number of homes owned by a husband and wife team, Ernie & Dr Karen Graham. The home provides professional care and support in a friendly and homely environment.
Virus Testing We are testing for viral infection when symptoms present within our care setting. To test, monitor and allow residents to communicate with relatives, the prevalence of room-level connectivity within the home is becoming increasingly relevant. – the service is performing badly and we've taken enforcement action against the provider of the service. Birkin Lodge is a residential, nursing and dementia care home situated in the tranquil town of Tunbridge Wells, Kent. We have a dedicated team of care staff who go out of their way to ensure that our residents are comfortable... We have identified breaches in relation to person centred care and need for consent at this inspection.
Staff respect personal rights and privacy and will respond to individual needs. The home has an occupational therapist and an activities organizer who provide a thriving and stimulating programme. We will work alongside the provider and local authority to monitor progress. We will continue to monitor information we receive about the service, which will help inform when we next inspect. People were not always offered choice in the care and support process. Tenancy agreements placed restrictions on people, for example, they were not able to have cooking facilities in their home. It provides personal care to people living in their own rooms under a tenancy agreement within Cornford House.
For services we haven't rated we use ticks and crosses to show whether we've asked them to take further action or taken enforcement action against them. – the service isn't performing as well as it should and we have told the service how it must improve. This is information providers are required to send us annually with key information about their service, what they do well, and improvements they plan to make. The home provides accommodation for physically frail older people together with a specialist unit for older people with dementia type illnesses. In addition, our leasehold Nursing Suites offer full nursing care to physically frail residents’ in their own home. Most of the accommodation is for physically frail older people but the home also incorporates a specialist unit to care for older people with dementia type illnesses. Full 24 hour nursing care is available for all residents, so that most residents can have a home for life within the scheme. Residents’ spouses can also be accommodated, so that couples can stay together even when one develops the need for on-going care.
